Blackheath Farmers Market — Every Sunday 10am–2pm

Voted **Best Market in Lewisham 2025**, the Blackheath Farmers Market has been a Sunday institution since September 2000. Every week, rain or shine, the Blackheath Station car park transforms into a bustling hive of community activity.

The horse chestnut on Blackheath Avenue — is it coming down?

I noticed the council has placed a survey marker around the old horse chestnut near the bus stop on Blackheath Avenue. Does anyone have information on whether it's being assessed for removal? It's been a landmark for at least 80 years and would be a great loss to the green corridor.

Best independent coffee on the Vale?

Having recently moved to SE3, I'm on a mission to find the best flat white in the village. I've tried a couple of the cafés on Tranquil Vale but would love recommendations from long-time residents. Bonus points if they have a decent selection of pastries!

The origins of the name 'Blackheath' — plague pits or dark soil?

The popular theory that Blackheath takes its name from its use as a burial ground during the Black Death has long fascinated me. However, I recently came across research suggesting the name derives from the dark, peaty soil of the common itself. Does anyone have access to primary sources or local records that might settle the matter once and for all?
